Chapter Eighteen

WITH A QUICK SHOUT of encouragement to myself, I jumped. My stomach leaped into my throat, and every nerve screamed in panic. Then, a rush blasted through me as I reached my arms overhead, crashing into the cold water forcefully. I pushed my way to the surface, a roar of exhilaration leaving my lips when I re-emerged.

“You were right. That was amazing!”

“Adrenaline is the greatest feeling ever, apart from an orgasm,” Adrian said, his large, warm hand stroking my face as he swam closer.

“Is sex all you ever think about?” I rolled my eyes, but my lips curved into a smirk.

“It is difficult not to think about it when such a beautiful creature is in your company,” he whispered, and he licked his lips, sending goosebumps down my spine.

I leaned back to float, humming the melody to a pop song. I frowned; I loved music. I loved stupid, silly, pop songs, and I hated that I hadn’t heard one in weeks.

“Are you a fan of music, mi querida?” Adrian was inches from me as I sat up. “I have not once heard you sing a single note.”

“Yeah, well there’s a lot of things you haven’t seen me do that I enjoy. Between training to defend myself, and constantly thinking about the pressure I’m under there’s not a lot of time for play.”

“Your light is fading, Preciosa.” His blue eyes swirled, churning a deep navy as sincerity flowed through me.

“I’m getting stronger every day, dude.” I splashed a wave up at him, and he wiped the drops from his face.

“I was referring to your spirit.” He put his big, warm hand over my heart. “Here.”

I fought the tears threatening to fall from my eyes as he forced my gaze with his ocean stare. “I’m fine.”

He took my hand, “You are a terrible liar.”

“I’m not good with feelings.” I broke our intense stare-off, biting my thumbnail.

“You are not good with your feelings.” He stroked my cheek with his thumb, turning my face back to his. “Even now, you are torn between confiding in me or fucking me, and yet you do not want to do either.”

“Look, I came here, we got your weeds. Now, tell me what this spell is for.” I pushed against his chest, flowing through the water a few feet.

“It is to ensure your safety when we bring you back to the portal tomorrow.”

“Wait, what? No one said anything about sending me back tomorrow.” I shook my head, my heart cracking at the thought.

“That is because we are sharing as little as possible with you.”

“Oh, well thanks for the brutal honesty! What the fuck, Adrian? How much don’t I know?”

“Much.” He smiled.

“This isn’t funny!” I treaded over and shoved his chest. “Why are you keeping me in the dark?”

“Because the less you know the better. In case Natrik does get ahold of you.”

“W-what does that mean?” I swallowed hard.

He patted down his braids, “If he captures you, he will torture you for any information he can. The less he can get, the better.
